I made the new CL Atlanta “food & drink” portal live a little before noon today.

A combination of css overrides, modular components (aka, widgets), rss feeds, database queries, and static html. the code may not be the prettiest thing, but hey, it looks good on both IE and Firefox.

dejarías tu enamorado francés por acompañarme en mi amor platónico por todo lo francés? sustituirías esa comodidad de tener el símbolo propio del romance por un pobre poeta amateur que nunca ha publicado su literatura mas encuentra en ti su mayor inspiración?

la única manera de saberlo es preguntándote… y a estas alturas de mi vida… prefiero salir de la duda que caer en la miseria de tragarme la esperanza sólo por una pena pendeja de principiante… por dios… si soy un experto en hacer el oso…

Henri in "A Christmas Tale"

On a day where nothing seemed to go right (I think I fractured a small bone in my left foot), I went to see “A Christmas Tale (Un Conte de Noël)” with a friend. Expecting a French holiday movie (what is one to expect out of that, really, anyway), the film was turning out to be a complicated, boring, art movie, it eventually revealed itself as an intricate and complex film, rich in psychological twists and turns that are rewarding if you managed to following along for most of the ride.

There is a problem with the film, I think, which is that it tries to be too many things at once… A deep psychological family drama, a character study, a threaded love triangle, a holiday movie, a social commentary on institutionalized medicine - all wrapped into (spoiler alert) a children’s play.

The fragmented nature of each scene is syncopated only to the big band jazz that dominates the soundtrack and which Papa composes for a living.

We are to assume the “tale” is a melange of different plots and subplots set against the backdrop of a seemingly dysfunctional family cursed with carrying a rare form of blood cancer in its genes. A not-so-subtle metaphor for what we see on devolve on the screen as the family reunites for Christmas for the first time in five years.

There are multiple scenes that do not fit the almost-linear narrative, and, much like the improvised nature of jazz, swing unexpectedly. If I recall correctly, we see the scene where Henri goes to bed all bruised up before the actual fight in which his brother-in-law kicks the crap out of him.

Likewise, his sister (Elizabeth, whose husband provided the ass-kicking) joyfully administers first-aid to a bloodied Henri – an impossibility if we are to believe one of the main subplots of the film: the bitter and ambiguous conflict of siblings between them, that had originally “banished” Henri from any family gatherings for five years.

Then there are the subtle hints that what we see may not be exactly an objective presentation of the Vuillard Family’s reality. The African masks on the wall, the fact that Paul, Elizabeth’s son, is afraid of mirrors, and its manifestation captured in a strange dog that only he (and us) can see , the crudeness and cynicism with which some family members refer to each other… en fin.

But the reward to those who watch patiently is at the end (and foreshadowed near midnight on Christmas eve) as the film slowly inches towards an abrupt, but good ending to what was becoming a bitter holiday tale of despair. Currently playing at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema.
